He looks out for himself and often clashes with Sonic's personality of a care-free attitude.
Shadow is a calm, monotonous, serious Hedgehog with no visible emotion.
Eventually, Shadow became free for 4 years. Towards the end, it shows an encounter with Zielo, who had been holding a dark blue glow in his hands, presumably from Sonic. This is more elaborated on in the comic People in White Coats, showing Shadow's despair and condition. While not much is revealed about Shadow's past, he was experimented on for 50 years.
